Bribery Commission Under Fire: Is Justice Being Delayed for Minister Jayakody?

Energy Minister Kumara Jayakody, facing accusations of misappropriating 8 million rupees while serving at the Fertilizer Corporation in 2015, has requested to personally present his case to the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC).

According to a senior official, the Minister’s request was made through a President’s Counsel. However, the CIABOC has informed Minister Jayakody that he can submit his arguments in writing if necessary. This new development is expected further to delay the filing of charges against the minister, the ‘Sunday Times’ reports.

The CIABOC had previously approved Director General Ranga Dissanayake to take necessary action in the High Court against Minister Jayakody and two others regarding the alleged 8 million rupee misappropriation. The accusations stem from Jayakody’s role as the head of the tender board that awarded a scrutinized tender.

The timing of this request is notable, as it comes after CIABOC investigations were reportedly concluded and ready for prosecution.
