Deputy Minister Chathuranga Abesinghe has initiated legal action against Waruna Rajapaksha, sending a legal letter demanding compensation for defamation following statements made by Rajapaksha on his YouTube channel concerning a liquor manufacturing license. In response, Rajapaksha alleges he is the target of an organized operation orchestrated from “Pelawatte” with the sole aim of destroying him.
Waruna further claims that this alleged operation, whether knowingly or unknowingly, utilizes state resources and taxpayer money, including a five-person “unit” from the Presidential Media Unit dedicated to continuously attacking him.
Elaborating on his political journey, Waruna stated he has moved from the left to the right, advocating for a social market economy and liberal ideals. While he expressed admiration for Ranil Wickremesinghe, he revealed he left the United National Party due to a political misstep and is currently with the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB).
Waruna asserts that when he raises policy-level questions to the government, he is met with personal attacks instead of answers. He highlighted several key issues he has questioned, including connectivity plans signed with India, agreements with an Indian geological institution regarding cobalt minerals in the maritime boundary, changes in gas and coal tender conditions, the appointment of the Bribery Commission’s Director General, and the Kingsbury deal.
He lamented that instead of addressing these concerns, he faces personal accusations such as, “How many parties have you been in?”, “Aren’t you a thief?”, or “Can you even run a shop?”.
Waruna emphasized that he will use any accusation thrown at him to further his success and urged his critics to focus on their own lives rather than spending their time on him.
