Intense internal criticism and accusations have once again surfaced within the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), alleging a deliberate conspiracy to derail ongoing unity discussions between the SJB and the United National Party (UNP).
These accusations are primarily directed at a group within the SJB, derisively labeled “SJB Media Gurus.” Party insiders widely believe that the past actions of this group were instrumental in Sajith Premadasa’s defeat in the presidential election and even contributed to the National People’s Power (NPP) gaining control of the Colombo Municipal Council.
“Failure’s Burden” and the “Foolish Herd”
Critics within the party point out that this media team has made no significant contribution to Sajith Premadasa’s success, lacking any strategic plan to enhance his public image. They contrast this with the successful strategies employed by other national parties, accusing the “SJB Media Gurus” of actively working against their own leader’s victory.
Controversy Surrounds “Winning Team” List
Further fueling the controversy, at a critical juncture in the unity talks, the accused media group circulated a list titled “The Team That Can Make Sajith Win.” This move has drawn widespread condemnation.
Of particular surprise is the inclusion of Dr. Harsha de Silva as the first name on this list. Critics highlight the irony, given that this very media group allegedly conspired against and consistently attacked Dr. de Silva during the last election, contributing to his defeat.
The “strategic” list, as proposed by this group, is as follows:
Proposed Team to Secure Sajith’s Victory:
- Dr. Harsha de Silva: A popular figure of the new generation and a leader capable of attracting floating voters.
- Prasad Sirwardana: An eloquent speaker who emerged from the last election, comparable to JVP MPs, capable of connecting with the younger generation.
- Chitral Fernando (Puttalam): A new face who skillfully presents arguments, capable of winning youth votes.
- Suranga Rathnayake (Anuradhapura): A young MP who prominently voices opinions in Parliament.
- Waruna Deeptha Rajapaksha: Knowledgeable about JVP history, capable of dismantling their arguments, and a popular figure on social media.
- Charith Abeyasinghe: An actor with political acumen, similar to JVP’s Jagath Manuwarna, and appealing to a young audience.
- Dr. Chamal Sanjeewa: A popular figure among professionals who spoke out against the “medicine mafia.”
Commenting on this list, critics assert that before devising strategies for victory, the “SJB Media Gurus,” held responsible for past failures, must first be removed from their positions.
