Following the recent local government elections, opposition political groups, led by the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), have secured a majority in several councils.
Ranasinghe Wanigasekaralage Dharmadasa of SJB was elected Chairman of Kabithigollawa Pradeshiya Sabha, and Ajith Vipula Bandara Subasinghe of SJB became Chairman of Ududumbara Pradeshiya Sabha.
Furthermore, Lakshitha Aberathna of SJB was appointed Mayor of Kaduwanna Municipal Council, and Ifthikar Imamudeen of SJB was elected Chairman of Akurana Pradeshiya Sabha.
Secretaries of key opposition parties announced their intention to work as a united opposition to establish control in local authorities where they hold the majority. A press conference was held yesterday at the N.M. Perera Center in Borella regarding the establishment of power in these institutions.
Tissa Attanayake, National Organizer of SJB, stated that several political parties joined together as a common opposition for the local government elections. He stated that various political parties had decided to unite at the divisional level to fulfill public aspirations. He added that discussions are ongoing with estate political parties, Muslim political organizations, and independent groups. The process of establishing power in local government institutions began yesterday as a joint effort, with power being established as a united opposition.
