The opposition groups have achieved a resounding victory in the election for representatives of the Deniyaya Kotapola Multi-Purpose Cooperative Society, widely regarded as one of Sri Lanka’s largest multi-service cooperatives, thereby consolidating their power.
According to the election results, the groups supported by the opposition secured victories in a remarkable 67 out of 100 regional divisions. In contrast, the groups backed by the National People’s Power were only able to win 33 regional divisions.
This outcome marks a significant shift in the cooperative sector. The new administration of the Deniyaya Kotapola Cooperative, a major economic hub in the Southern Province, will now fall under the representation of the opposition.
