In response to recent high-profile killings and growing concerns over the safety of opposition Members of Parliament (MPs), authorities have agreed to provide necessary security to all MPs who request it. This significant decision was announced today (October 31) by Parliamentarian Jagath Vithanage.
The agreement came after a special meeting held today at the Parliament complex, chaired by Speaker Jagath Wickramarathna, to discuss the security of MPs. Inspector General of Police Priyantha Weerasuriya also participated in this urgent discussion. During the meeting, threats to the security of opposition MPs and the measures needed to address them were extensively discussed. As a key outcome, both the IGP and the Speaker unanimously agreed to provide security to any MP who requests it.
Meanwhile, MP Jagath Vithanage further informed the media that the Inspector General of Police expressed regret during the meeting regarding a recent statement made about Mr. Vithanage. Political sources describe this decision as a crucial and positive step towards ensuring the safety of parliamentarians.
