The Sri Lankan government has lodged a strong protest with Canada regarding the construction of a Tamil genocide memorial in Canada. The objection was conveyed during a meeting between Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath and the Canadian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka.
Minister Herath informed the High Commissioner of the Sri Lankan government’s firm opposition to the baseless genocide allegations and the approval granted for the erection of such a monument. The Minister emphasized that such actions hinder the government’s efforts to promote national unity, peace, and reconciliation among Sri Lanka’s diverse communities.
This development follows a request made by Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa yesterday (13th). Rajapaksa condemned the incident and urged the government to summon the Canadian High Commissioner to lodge a protest and to insist that Canada acknowledge the accurate historical information regarding the conflict in Sri Lanka. He asserted that no genocide has been proven against the Sri Lankan military under international law and that it cannot be proven.
Recalling the violent acts committed by the LTTE organization and their recruitment of child soldiers, Rajapaksa pointed out that the Sri Lankan military conducted a legitimate military operation to eliminate the LTTE. He further stated that Canada’s history of supporting terrorist groups raises questions about its credibility regarding global peace and security.
