Social media recently highlighted Malima MP Upul Abeywickrama for his disciplined and composed conduct during the Derana ‘Wadapitiya’ political discussion program. However, a serious judicial report concerning him has now come to light.
According to these documents, the MP is facing a case for violating sections of the Penal Code, constituting a punishable offense.
Charge: Threatening a State Guard with a Knife
The primary accusation against Upul Abeywickrama is that he illegally leased land belonging to the Land Reform Commission (LRC). After this act was discovered, he allegedly threatened a state-appointed guard with a knife.
As per the judicial records (copies 53236/PC):
- Incident: Investigations were conducted into the MP’s illegal acquisition of an LRC land parcel.
- State Intervention: The government deployed a guard to oversee this land.
- Allegation: The MP threatened the state guard with a knife, making death threats, thereby committing an offense that violates sections of the Penal Code.
The reports indicate that a judicial process is ongoing for this case, and the MP is reported to have committed a punishable offense.
Contradiction Between Television Demeanor and Actual Allegations
Critics point out a serious contradiction: an MP facing such grave criminal charges appearing on a television program and presenting himself as a virtuous and upright individual, giving an “anagarika act.”
Political commentators suggest that the television behavior and real-world actions of an individual facing charges such as misuse of state resources and threatening a state official should be re-examined.
