Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananda Wijepala has lodged a complaint with the Inspector General of Police against a fake news item circulated on social media. The false story claimed that Minister Wijepala had a meeting at the ministry with an individual named Nishshanka Senadhipathi. The complaint was filed by the minister’s media secretary.
Meanwhile, social media has raised questions over the provision of police protection for a tuition teacher, Hyeshika Fernando, who conducts classes for the Grade 5 Scholarship Examination. The government, which has claimed to have cut down on security for VIPs including the President, Prime Minister, and MPs to save state funds, has been questioned on the basis for providing special police protection to the tuition teacher. Social media users have also questioned whether police protection is provided on the request of any individual.
Ms. Fernando was given special security by the Sri Lanka Police when she attended an awards ceremony for students of her tuition class held at the BMICH in Colombo recently. Reportedly, four police motorbikes and a security vehicle were deployed for her protection.
