The Citizens’ Constitutional Council (CCC) has expressed grave concern over recent deaths in police custody, including the case of Mr. M. Sathsar Nimesh. The CCC emphasizes that these incidents highlight the urgent need to safeguard the right to life and strengthen the call for a new constitution in Sri Lanka.
The CCC asserts that the right to life is a fundamental human right that must be protected under all circumstances. However, these recent events demonstrate a severe violation of this right in Sri Lanka. The CCC also expresses disappointment that the right to life is not explicitly guaranteed by the Sri Lankan Constitution.
The CCC’s demand for a new constitution is based on the need to protect and promote these fundamental rights. Such a constitution would enable individuals to seek protection from rights violations and ensure justice and accountability.
The CCC has put forward several demands to the government, including President, such as conducting an independent, impartial, and transparent investigation into Mr. Nimesh’s death, establishing an independent commission to oversee complaints against the police, and expediting police reforms. Additionally, they are calling for swift legal action against those responsible, strict measures to prevent torture in police stations, and initiating the process of drafting a new constitution.
The CCC also appeals to the public to support their cause and stand up for the protection of fundamental rights.
