Former MP Pillayan Arrested Over Disappearance of Professor Ravindranath

0

Former Member of Parliament Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan, also known as Pillayan, has been arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department for questioning in connection with the 2006 disappearance of Professor Sivasuubramaniam Ravindranath, the Vice-Chancellor of Eastern University.

Pillayan, a former military leader, faces allegations of involvement in acts of violence and war crimes. He led the Tamil Makkal Viduthalai Pulikal (TMVP) and later served as the Chief Minister of the Eastern Provincial Council.

Professor Ravindranath disappeared in 2006 after attending a conference in Colombo. He had been receiving threats from armed groups operating under the TMVP, which at the time was fighting against the LTTE with the tacit support of the Sri Lankan government.

Before his disappearance, Professor Ravindranath had been threatened, and Dr. K. Balasukumar, the Dean of the Faculty of Arts at Eastern University, had been abducted by members of the Karuna group.

While Pillayan’s direct involvement in Professor Ravindranath’s disappearance has not been proven, he has been under suspicion due to his leadership of the TMVP. Another paramilitary leader, Vinayagamoorthy Muralitharan (Karuna Amman), has also been questioned in connection with the case.

Pillayan’s arrest is a significant development in the case of Professor Ravindranath’s disappearance. Armed groups operating with the government’s protection during that period have been widely accused of involvement in disappearances and other crimes. The lack of accountability for these crimes has been a major concern.

SJB Accuses Government of Inaction on US Taxes

0

Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa has accused the government of failing to take action on US taxes imposed several months ago, despite warnings from the Samagi Jana Balawegaya. Premadasa made these remarks during a public meeting in the Dedigama electorate ahead of the upcoming local government elections.

Former President Ranil Wickremesinghe and Parliamentarian Prasad Siriwardana had also raised concerns about the issue. During his tenure, Wickremesinghe planned to remove the CESS and PAL import taxes to counter the US President’s tariff war. He had also pledged to eliminate these taxes within five years during the 2023 budget presentation.

Wickremesinghe’s strategy involved reducing taxes on imports from the US and other countries and using economic diplomacy to persuade the US to offer concessions on tariff impositions on Sri Lanka. However, the effectiveness of this approach was questioned, especially given the sudden reduction of taxes on US purchases in the budget and the uncertainty surrounding President Trump’s response.

Parliamentary Procedure Challenged in Move to Oust Police Chief

0

Several opposition political parties in Sri Lanka have raised objections to the proposed motion to remove Police Chief Deshabandu Tennakoon from office, alleging that the process violates parliamentary standing orders.

The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), and the New Democratic Front (NDF) have all expressed their dissent.

SJB General Secretary Ranjith Madduma Bandara stated that while they do not oppose a motion against the Police Chief, they object to the manner in which it is being presented, claiming it contradicts standing orders.

The opposition leaders have pointed out that Standing Order 91E explicitly prohibits parliamentary debate on matters that are sub judice (under judicial consideration).

The government spokesperson has countered that while standing orders prohibit discussion on matters under judicial consideration, there is also a provision allowing any motion to be taken up for debate at the discretion of the Speaker.

A motion to appoint a committee to investigate the allegations against the Police Chief is scheduled to be presented in Parliament on the 8th.

The Diyawadana Nilame has organized a dansala to provide lunch for devotees, which will feed 35,000 people per day, according to a spokesperson for the Dalada Maligawa.

Under full government patronage, all public services have been assigned to the respective heads of state institutions. The opportunity to worship the Dalada will be provided for 65,000 people per day, from 2:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

RW Urges ETCA Agreement with India Amid US Trade Policy Shift

0

Former Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe has stated that the US market will no longer be accessible to Sri Lanka due to new tariffs imposed by the US. He proposes that Sri Lanka should sign the ETCA agreement with India as a solution to the current situation.

In an interview with Indian media, the former President mentioned that he had intended to sign the agreement in 2025, during his presidency. He emphasized that Sri Lanka must now proceed with the ETCA agreement, given the shift in US trade policy and the uncertainties surrounding trade with the European Union.

Wickremesinghe further stated that Sri Lanka needs to explore new areas beyond apparel exports and diversify its products to access new markets.
