Court Orders Investigation into Social Media Accounts Spreading False News about Judge

Colombo Chief Magistrate Tanuja Lakmali today granted permission to the Internet Security and Intelligence Unit of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to obtain information from six social media accounts that have been spreading false and defamatory news about the Court of Appeal and Appeal Court Judge Balendran Shashi Mahendran.

The CID’s Intelligence Unit had requested permission to submit nine questions to the social media networks and obtain relevant answers as part of an ongoing investigation into a complaint filed by Judge Mahendran.

The Judge’s complaint states that these social media accounts had published false information about him and the Court of Appeal, including a claim that he had acquitted a defendant in a high-profile murder case. The accounts had also used his official photograph in uniform.

During the hearing, the CID informed the court that the Judge had never presided over the case in question and that the Court of Appeal Registrar had informed the CID in writing. The CID also stated that the false news had tarnished the image of the entire judicial system and attempted to erode public trust in the judiciary.

The CID is conducting an investigation into the matter under the powers granted by Section 124 of the Code of Criminal Procedure No. 15 of 1979.

Vehicle Demand Slumps Amid Soaring Prices and Import Delays

0

Leading vehicle importers in Sri Lanka report a significant drop in demand for vehicles due to a sharp increase in prices following the lifting of the import ban. Despite expectations of high demand with the resumption of vehicle imports, importers say that such demand has not materialized, and supply delays persist due to import restrictions.

Importers have been informed that imported vehicles must be NE registered within three months or re-exported, failing which they may face fines or have their import licenses revoked. As a result, they only initiate the import process after receiving a confirmed order from a buyer.

Under these circumstances, importers say it takes approximately five months from a customer placing an order to receiving the vehicle. This delay, coupled with the escalating prices of new vehicles, has discouraged buyers, leading them to either abandon their purchases or opt for used cars.

Toyota Lanka, a leading vehicle importer, has removed vehicle prices from their website and only provides them upon request. A few months ago, their website listed prices such as Rs. 6.7 million for a Toyota Vios, Rs. 9.5 million for a Toyota Raize, and Rs. 15.3 million for a Toyota Rush. The price of a Suzuki Wagon R, a popular car in Sri Lanka, has now reportedly exceeded Rs. 7 million.

While there is a high demand for electric vehicles, their prices remain very high, and the waiting period for delivery after placing an order is around six months. Some prominent car dealerships in the country have no vehicles available, while used car prices at other dealerships have risen significantly.

Despite a senior official from the Port Authority stating that around 950 vehicles in approximately 400 containers have arrived at the Colombo Port from Japan and other countries in recent months, with a significant number also arriving at the Hambantota Port, the Chairman of the Vehicle Importers’ Association, Prasada Maanage, maintains that vehicle importers across the island have sufficient stocks of new vehicles for purchase at reasonable prices. He also stated that used car prices have dropped considerably.

Prime Minister, addressing the 30th anniversary of Devapala College in Polgolla, Kurunegala, declared that Sri Lanka’s most valuable asset is its human capital. She expressed the government’s commitment to maximizing this potential through education reforms.

The Prime Minister highlighted that prioritizing education has enabled Sri Lanka to maintain a high level of human development despite economic challenges. She stressed the need for continued focus on education to enhance human capital further.

She dismissed the notion of ‘good’ or ‘bad’ schools, emphasizing the collective responsibility to ensure a quality education for all children. The Prime Minister also advocated for further educational reforms to foster values such as collectivism and compassion and to nurture a generation capable of leading the nation.

Addressing the recent controversy, the Prime Minister clarified that no law prohibits politicians from attending school functions. She emphasized that avoiding politicization of the school system is the responsibility of all parliamentarians.

However, a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office contradicts this, stating that she had previously instructed education ministry officials to stop inviting public representatives to school events.
